GUEST SPEAKER - Philip Wells - Bunkers Conservation Reserve
Bunkers Conservation Reserve. 140km2 of Flinders Ranges Wilderness. One of the Oldest Places in the World!
The Bunkers Conservation Reserve is located on the east boundary of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, managed by the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby Preservation Association. The association exists to ensure the long-term survival of the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby and the protection of its unique habitat within the Bunkers Conservation Reserve.
The Bunkers Conservation Reserve is a private reserve situated within the traditional lands of the Adnyamathanha aboriginal people and takes in some of the most rugged country of the Flinders Ranges; Loves Mine Range, Mount Caernarvon (921m) and The Bunkers Range.
The Bunkers Conservation Reserve is now a great example of this iconic South Australian location; since 2001 the land has been destocked, fenced and gated, revealing the unique flora, fauna and geology of this semi-arid zone.
A drive through the reserve along the Caernarvon Track, a 54km loop, gives you access to this amazing landscape. The 360o views atop Mt Caernarvon, the highest self-drive 4WD track in the Flinders Ranges, are spectacular from St Mary's Peak, The Gammon Ranges and Lake Torrens.
